The Best of the MET Gala {2018}
May 08, 2018
Another year, another MET Gala here in NYC! I usually don’t review red carpet events, but this year really spoke to me. Scrolling through Twitter and Instagram, I was falling in and out of love with the designs for the night. With the theme of the Gala being "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination" in honor of the new exhibition opening from May 10th to October 8th, 2018 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, I immediately knew I was going to be obsessed with this year. Me being a huge fan of European fashion and costume.
Me, as a fashion designer, dreams of one day making a design for a red carpet event, but until that happens, I will sit from afar and watch the beautifully created garments shine and shimmer on the carpet.
Some of my absolute favorites from the night goes as follows (in no particular order):
Womenswear Favorites:
Jennifer Connelly wearing Louis Vuitton
Tessa Thompson wearing Thom Browne and Tiffany & Co. Jewelry
Janelle Monae wearing Jennifer Fisher
Zendaya wearing Atelier Versace, Tiffany & Co. Jewelry, and Jimmy Choo shoes
Evan Rachel Wood wearing Altuzarra
Alek Wek wearing H&M
Lily Collin in Givenchy
Menswear Favorites:
Sean Combs wearing Musika Frère (designed by Davidson Petit-Frère and Aleks Musika)
Christian Combs wearing Dolce & Gabbana
Virgil Abloh wearing Louis Vuitton
Chadwick Boseman wearing Versace
Cole Sprouse wearing Thom Browne
Jaden Smith wearing Louis Vuitton
These designs happened to be my favorite because they either spoke to my personal style or were just a show stopper. And can be talk about how iconic Jaden Smith is. Yes, he is truly an "icon living".
I also noticed a similar design style in most of the garments as well. More 16th-17th century inspired silhouettes were very prominent in the women’s garments. Especially in Yara Shahidi’s Chanel Dress and Cardi B’s Moschino Dress.
Yara Shahidi wearing Chanel Couture
Cardi B wearing Moschino
All-in-all, I think that this MET Gala was incredible and was opened to a lot of interpretation for each designer that managed to create such different yet elegant designs that encompassed the goal of this event. Of course, some of the designs are not everyone’s cup of tea and some people may enjoy particular looks more than others. Either way, it takes hard work and creativity to create fashion and in that way, they’re all beautiful.
